For distilleries in Andhra Pradesh, broken rice for ethanol has become one of the most practical grain feedstocks available. It is starch-rich, easy to handle and produced in large volumes by the rice mills around Nellore. But not every lot of broken rice performs the same in a fermenter. Moisture, starch content, foreign matter and supply consistency all affect your yield and your plant’s uptime. This guide explains what to look for when buying broken rice, how to compare suppliers, and how to plan supply around the paddy seasons in our region.
Why Broken Rice Works Well as Ethanol Feedstock
Broken rice is the fragment of grain separated out during milling. It has the same starch as whole rice but a lower market value for food use, which makes it a cost-effective input for grain-based distilleries. Once milled into flour and cooked, its starch converts readily to fermentable sugars through liquefaction and saccharification.
A few reasons distilleries value it:
- High starch content: rice is among the most starch-dense cereal grains, which supports good alcohol yield per tonne.
- Uniform particle size: broken grains mill evenly, which helps with consistent slurry preparation.
- Local availability: Andhra Pradesh has a dense network of rice mills, so supply can be sourced close to the plant, cutting freight time and cost.
- Low fibre and husk: clean broken rice leaves less residue to manage than some other feedstocks.
The Policy Backdrop: Ethanol Blending and Grain Supply
India’s ethanol blending programme has made grain-based distilleries a major part of the fuel supply chain. The country reached its target of 20% ethanol blending in petrol in 2025, and grain now supplies a large share of the ethanol produced, alongside sugarcane-based feedstocks.
Government rice has also played a role. Under the Open Market Sale Scheme (Domestic), the Food Corporation of India sold rice to ethanol distilleries at ₹2,250 per quintal from June to October 2025 and ₹2,320 per quintal from November 2025, according to figures shared with Parliament in July 2026. Around 6.35 million tonnes were dispatched to ethanol plants between June 2025 and June 2026. Allocations under such schemes depend on policy decisions that can change from season to season, so many distilleries balance government allocations with private purchases of broken rice from mills and aggregators.
For a plant manager, the lesson is simple: build a supply base that does not depend on a single channel.
Quality Specs to Check When Buying Broken Rice for Ethanol
Price per quintal only tells part of the story. A cheaper lot with high moisture or impurities can cost you more in lost yield, extra cleaning and equipment wear. Agree on clear specifications with every supplier and test each consignment on arrival.
Moisture content
Moisture affects both storage life and how much starch you actually buy per tonne. Wet grain adds weight without adding alcohol, and it is more prone to mould and heating in storage, especially during the monsoon months in coastal Andhra Pradesh. Specify a maximum moisture level in your purchase terms and use a calibrated moisture meter at the gate.
Starch content
Starch drives yield. Ask suppliers whether they can share lab reports, and run your own periodic starch analysis on incoming lots. Tracking starch by supplier over time will show you who delivers consistently.
Foreign matter and damaged grain
Stones, dust, husk, chaff and insect-damaged grains reduce yield and can damage hammer mills and pumps. Set limits for foreign matter and for discoloured or damaged grains, and reject or re-price lots that exceed them.
Grain size and mixing
Broken rice comes in different grades depending on fragment size. Smaller fractions and rice bran mixed into a lot can change how the flour behaves during cooking. Confirm the grade you need and check for mixing.
Infestation and odour
Musty smells, live insects or webbing indicate poor storage. Grain in this condition may have lost starch and may introduce contamination into your process.
Choosing a Broken Rice Supplier in Andhra Pradesh
The right supplier is one who can deliver the agreed quality, in the agreed volume, on the agreed day, month after month. When comparing options, ask:
- Where does the rice come from? A supplier with direct links to local rice mills and farmers can trace each lot back to its source.
- Can they handle volume? Check whether they can scale supply during your peak production months.
- Do they manage logistics? A supplier with its own transport arrangements reduces the risk of delays between the mill and your gate.
- Is there storage capacity? Warehousing lets a supplier buy when broken rice is plentiful after harvest and deliver steadily through the year.
- How transparent are weighing and invoicing? Weighbridge slips, clear quality reports and prompt documentation save disputes later.
- Can they support unloading? Some suppliers can also arrange trained manpower for loading, unloading and material handling at your site.
Working with an integrated supply partner, one that handles procurement, transport, storage and labour, means fewer handovers and fewer points where quality or timing can slip. See how our broken rice supply for ethanol plants covers each of these points.
Planning Year-Round Supply Around Nellore’s Paddy Seasons
Broken rice availability follows the paddy harvest and milling cycle. In Nellore district, paddy is grown in more than one season, and mill output rises after each harvest. Supply is usually easiest to secure, and prices steadier, when mills are running at full capacity.
Practical steps for distilleries:
- Forecast monthly demand based on your production plan and share it with suppliers early.
- Contract ahead for a base volume, and keep room for spot purchases when market conditions suit you.
- Build a buffer stock in well-ventilated, pest-controlled storage so a delayed truck or a short milling month does not stop your plant.
- Diversify sources across several mills and, where eligible, government allocations.
- Protect grain in the monsoon with covered transport, raised stacking and regular inspection.
Much of the broken rice in our region starts as paddy bought directly from local farmers. You can read how that first step works in our article on how Nellore farmers can sell paddy directly, and more about how paddy procurement works in SPSR Nellore.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is broken rice as good as whole rice for ethanol production?
For fermentation, the starch in broken rice behaves the same way as the starch in whole rice. Because broken rice costs less than whole grain meant for food, it is often the more economical choice, provided the lot meets your moisture, starch and cleanliness specifications.
How should a distillery store broken rice?
Store it in a dry, well-ventilated godown on raised platforms or pallets, away from walls, with regular pest control and inspection. Rotate stock on a first-in, first-out basis, and check moisture closely during the monsoon.
Can I rely only on government rice allocations?
Government allocations can be a useful source, but quantities, prices and eligibility are set by policy and can change. Most distilleries reduce risk by combining them with steady private supply from mills and aggregators.
